After 28 years in broiler farming and the last 10 developing probiotics, I’ve learned one key thing; not all probiotics are created equal and the ones that make the biggest difference are often misunderstood.
Here’s my honest advice when choosing a probiotic for your farm. Focus on three things:
1. CFU strength, Colony Forming Units per gram
2. Consistency, Does it deliver the same results every time?
3. Real-world performance, Not just lab talk, but how it works in your shed
Cost per billion CFU on the market can vary massively, from over £200 down to just £0.10. And CFU content varies just as much, some products are as low as 1 billion CFU per gram.
A product might look affordable per kg, but if it’s only delivering 1 or 5 billion CFU/g, you’re paying far more per unit of active bacteria than you realise. And at those low levels, many strains simply don’t reach the threshold needed to do their job effectively.
At high concentrations (100+ billion CFU/g), strains like Bacillus subtilis and Lactobacillus don’t just populate, they activate:
With an exclusive few, producing antimicrobial peptides and bacteriocins
Forming biofilms that protect the gut wall
Generating enzymes and acids to reshape gut pH
Triggering quorum sensing, coordinated behaviours that select harmful bacteria and reinforce good bacteria. This only happens at higher density.
That’s why I developed Enviro Spore, delivering 300 billion CFU/g at manufacture, backed by consistency, and priced at just £31/kg.
If you’re looking to improve early chick performance, reduce harmful bacteria, or compare the value of what you're using now, drop me a message. I’m always happy to run the numbers and talk about what really works.
